Neuropsychological assessments are requested to help understand how the different areas and systems of the brain are working. An assessment is usually recommended when there are changes with memory, other thinking skills, or behaviour, or if a particular strength or delay in development is observed. There may be cognitive or behavioural changes that have been observed by the child or other people in their life. These changes may include changes in concentration, organisation, planning, reasoning, memory, language, perception, coordination, or personality.

What is a neuropsychological assessment used for?
◦ Profile a child/adolescent’s cognitive strengths and weaknesses to guide rehabilitation or educational/vocational planning.
◦ Inform or clarify a diagnosis, or explore mild levels of cognitive impairment.

◦ Identifying and planning recommendations for children or adolescents who may be experiencing difficulties with aspects of their cognition including memory,   attention, learning, language, executive function or visuospatial analysis.

◦ Document changes in functioning from prior assessments, including after relevant therapy or strategies have been put in place.
◦ To determine appropriate management, including referrals to other specialists, such as clinical psychologists, neurologists, psychiatrists, occupational therapists or social workers.

 ◦ Pre- and/or post-surgical neuropsychological assessment for children and adolescents with a diagnosis of epilepsy or brain tumour, etc.
